Screen printing: the streetwear workhorse

Screen printing is the default for a reason. It lays a thick, opaque layer of plastisol or water-based ink through a mesh screen, one screen per colour, which gives you the bold, flat blocks of colour that define streetwear graphics. On a 240 GSM tee or a 400 GSM hoodie, a well-cured screen print holds its edge and colour through years of washing.

The economics reward volume. You pay a one-time screen setup per colour, then the per-piece cost drops as the run grows, so a 300-piece order lands at a far stronger unit price than a 50-piece one. That makes screen printing the method of choice when your design has one to six spot colours and you are printing a real drop rather than a handful of samples.

DTG: when detail and low runs matter

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing sprays water-based ink straight into the fabric with an inkjet head, so it reproduces fine detail, gradients and photographic art with no per-colour setup. That makes DTG the strongest pick when your graphic has dozens of colours or a complex illustration, and when you want to test a design at low quantity before committing to bulk.

The trade-off is unit cost and fabric. DTG performs best on high-cotton jersey and does not scale down in price the way screen printing does, because there is no volume setup to amortise. On a 50-piece test run of a detailed graphic tee, DTG can be the smarter route; on a 500-piece single-colour drop, screen printing pulls ahead on both cost and hand-feel.

Puff and high-density prints

Puff printing uses an ink that expands under heat to create a raised, 3D texture, and high-density print builds ink up in sharp vertical walls for a rubberised, embossed look. Both are screen-printing techniques, so they carry the same durability and volume pricing, with an added premium feel that reads instantly on a hoodie chest hit or a back logo.

Streetwear brands lean on puff to make simple wordmarks and logos feel considered and expensive without adding colours. Because the effect is about dimension rather than palette, a one-colour puff print can look richer than a busy four-colour flat print. It suits heavyweight fleece and terry especially well.

Embroidery for logos and heavyweight pieces

Embroidery stitches your logo directly into the garment with thread, giving a durable, premium finish that never fades because there is no ink to wash out. It is the go-to for left-chest logos, sleeve hits, caps and the kind of understated branding that signals quality on a heavyweight piece.

Embroidery is priced by stitch count and does not suit large photographic art or fine gradients, so it complements print rather than replacing it. A common streetwear build is an embroidered chest logo with a screen-printed back graphic on the same hoodie, giving two textures on one garment.

All-over print and cut-and-sew graphics

For edge-to-edge, seam-to-seam graphics, all-over print (AOP) is the method. Sublimation AOP prints the fabric before the garment is cut and sewn, so the design runs across panels, over seams and into hoods with no blank margins, which no on-garment method can match.

Because AOP is a cut-and-sew process, it carries a higher setup than printing on a blank, and sublimation performs on polyester or high-poly blends rather than pure cotton. For loud, maximalist streetwear where the fabric itself is the graphic, it is the only route that delivers the full effect.

Hand-feel is the second lever. Water-based and discharge inks sink into the fabric for a soft, worn-in finish, while plastisol sits on top with a punchier look. On premium heavyweight pieces, most of our brand clients favour a softer hand, which we dial in at sampling.

Placement, print size and wash durability

Oversized back prints, common in streetwear, put the widest area under wash stress, which is where cure quality separates a print that lasts from one that cracks in a season.

Fabric weight and finish also steer the choice. Garment-dyed and acid-wash pieces behave differently under ink than raw blanks, and heavyweight terry takes puff and high-density beautifully because the loft supports the raised texture.
