What Is a Tech Pack and Why Do You Need One?

A tech pack is the technical spec sheet a factory manufactures from - measurements, fabric, trims and decoration. Here is what it needs to include.

A tech pack is the technical blueprint a factory builds a garment from – a document that specifies measurements, fabric, trims, construction, colorways and labeling so a design becomes a manufacturable spec instead of a sketch. Without one, a factory is guessing at your intent; with one, a factory can quote, pattern and sample against a fixed standard.

Brand founders moving from an idea to a produced garment often underestimate how much of the process a tech pack controls. It is not a mood board or a reference photo – it is the single document a pattern maker, cutter and sewing line all work from, and it is what separates a garment that matches your vision from one that approximates it.

What a tech pack actually contains

A complete tech pack has several parts, and each does a distinct job for the people building the garment:

  • Flat sketch (technical drawing) – a front and back line drawing of the garment showing seams, stitching and construction detail, not a stylized illustration.
  • Measurement / spec sheet – a point-of-measure table listing chest, length, shoulder, sleeve and hem for each size in the run, with tolerances.
  • Bill of materials – the exact fabric (GSM, fiber content, weave or knit type), trims, drawstrings, zippers and labels to be used.
  • Colorway breakdown – which colors apply to which panels, referenced against a color standard like Pantone where precision matters.
  • Construction and stitch notes – seam types, stitch density, reinforcement points, and any special finishing like a raw hem or garment wash.
  • Decoration placement – exact position, size and method (screen print, DTG, embroidery, puff, all-over print) for each graphic or logo.
  • Labeling and packaging – neck label, woven tag, hangtag artwork and placement, plus any poly-bag or box specification.

Why factories require a tech pack

A factory cannot quote or cut fabric based on a photo or a verbal description without a real risk of mismatch. Chest width, sleeve length, fabric weight and print placement are all measurable variables, and a tech pack turns each one into a number the cutting room and sewing line can work to directly, rather than an interpretation.

Requiring a tech pack also protects the brand. It becomes the reference the pre-production sample is checked against, and later the standard the factory’s quality-control team measures bulk output against. Without it, “close enough” becomes the standard, and that is rarely close enough once 50 or 500 pieces are on the table.

Who creates a tech pack

Larger or established brands often employ an in-house designer or technical designer who builds tech packs as part of the design process, using software like Adobe Illustrator or dedicated tech pack tools. Newer brands frequently hire a freelance technical designer for a one-off document, or start from a factory’s own spec-sheet template and fill in the details with reference images and rough measurements.

A tech pack does not have to be professionally illustrated to be usable – it has to be complete and specific.

From tech pack to finished garment

The tech pack is the starting input for the entire production sequence. A pattern maker builds a pattern from the spec sheet’s measurements, the factory sources fabric and trims matching the bill of materials, a pre-production sample is cut and built from that pattern and those materials, and the brand reviews the sample against the original tech pack line by line.

Any gap between the sample and the tech pack gets corrected before bulk cutting starts. Once the sample is approved, the tech pack (as reflected in the approved sample) becomes the fixed reference the production floor measures the whole order against, from the first unit to the last.

Common tech pack mistakes

The most frequent gap is a missing or vague point-of-measure table – “medium fit” is not a spec a cutting room can work from, but a chest measurement in inches with a tolerance is. Colorway ambiguity is close behind: referencing a color as “navy” without a Pantone or fabric swatch invites variation, since screens and printers render navy differently.

Missing decoration specs cause a similar problem – a logo described as “on the chest” without exact placement in inches from the shoulder seam and centerline leaves room for a print to land off-center. Incomplete labeling instructions are the last common gap: brands sometimes assume a factory will use a default label rather than specifying the exact private-label neck tag, woven label and hangtag they want.

How specific the measurements need to be

A workable spec sheet lists all the points of measure a garment’s fit depends on, not only the obvious ones. For a hoodie that means chest width, body length, sleeve length, cuff width, hood height and drawstring length, each given for the smallest and largest size in the run so the factory can grade the sizes in between correctly.

Tolerances matter as much as the target number. A spec that lists chest width as 22 inches with a quarter-inch tolerance tells the factory exactly how much variance is acceptable across a cutting batch. Without a stated tolerance, a factory defaults to its own standard, which may be looser than a brand expects on a fitted style.

Fabric and trim detail in the bill of materials

The bill of materials is where GSM, fiber content and construction get locked down in writing. A brand asking for 320 GSM brushed-back fleece needs that figure in the tech pack, not left as a verbal preference, because GSM is what a mill sources and weighs against before cutting begins.

Trims deserve the same precision. A drawstring’s diameter and cord-lock color, a zipper’s tooth size and pull style, and a label’s fabric and print method all belong in the bill of materials. Each one is a small decision that, left unspecified, the factory will make on your behalf using its own default.

Grading across a size run

A tech pack’s spec sheet usually lists two or three base sizes with full measurements, then a grade rule – the increment added or removed per size – to generate the rest of the size run. A half-inch chest grade between sizes is standard for streetwear, but a brand wanting a boxier or slimmer progression needs to state that grade explicitly.

Getting the grade rule right in the tech pack means a small and an XXL of the same design keep the same proportions and silhouette, rather than the larger size simply becoming a scaled-up version that reads differently on the body. This is a detail brands new to manufacturing often miss until a size run comes back inconsistent.

Do you need a tech pack to get a quote

A rough quote on price range and MOQ can often be given from a product type, fabric weight and decoration method alone, without a finished tech pack. A binding quote for cutting a pattern and sampling, however, needs at least the core details: garment type, fabric and GSM, decoration method and placement, and target sizes.

Tech packs for reorders and line extensions

Once a style has an approved tech pack and pre-production sample on file, reordering the same garment in the same colorway does not require a new tech pack – the factory works from the existing approved spec. A line extension, such as adding a new colorway or a cropped version of an existing hoodie, only needs the tech pack updated for the changed elements: a new colorway swatch, or a revised length in the spec sheet, rather than a document rebuilt from scratch.

This is one reason a complete, well-organized tech pack pays off beyond the first order – it becomes reusable infrastructure for a brand’s whole product line, not a one-time document.
